Job Title: Justice and Outreach Coordinator

Reports to: Wesley Foundation, Campus Minister/ Director

SUMMARY:

The Justice and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for engaging students directly on campus at the University of Washington, assisting the Wesley Foundation, a reconciling ministry sponsored by the United Methodist Church, to develop a supportive community where members may participate in open, thoughtful discussions about discipleship and Christian ethics, and become empowered to act for social justice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Practice Presence: Be an active, outgoing, visible presence on the UW campus. Provide hospitality off-site, creating a welcoming campus ministry environment, while engaging in missional outreach to potential members: inviting newcomers, offering fun opportunities for fellowship, being in supportive conversation, and employing “contemplative listening” skills. Design/implement social activities for students during fall UW orientation and throughout the academic year.
  • Social Justice Outreach: Work cooperatively with Mission and Outreach team and the Wesley Club Director to create, publicize, and lead programs, events, forums, and topical studies that promote dialogue about ethical issues, and thoughtfully engage students in social service and action for justice, on the UW campus proper and within the surrounding community. Also, plan and facilitate annual spring break service immersion experiences.
  • Communication Outreach: Develop relationships with UW students, faculty, staff, Registered Student Organizations, and other campus ministries through direct personal contact, advertising, and social networking. Maintain the website and regularly update Facebook page. Assist Director with quarterly newsletter.
  • Innovation: Make thoughtful contributions to Wesley Club campus ministry, based upon one’s skills and interests. Bring energy, enthusiasm, personal interest, and commitment to helping young adults grow in their Christian faith and integrate it with their academic life and personal values

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Theological training, religious studies, education, or social services background preferred.
  • Commitment to, and experience with, social justice or environmental action.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrable event planning experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, with high level of comfort engaging in public discourse, experience with volunteer recruitment, and skills in social networking and advertising desirable.
  • Experience and proven ability to design, facilitate, and lead group activities, particularly with young adults, in academic, non-profit, or ministry settings.
  • Previous membership within a faith community and willingness to attend and engage with students at University Temple United Methodist Church, next door to Wesley Club— a progressive, inclusive, reconciling church.

HOURS:

This is a full-time, ten-month position, working on Wednesdays through Sundays, from August 15thto June 15th, to serve throughout the UW academic year.

 COMPENSATION:

Salary, determined by the Finance Committee of the Board, is set currently at $30,000 for the ten-month contract.  The Justice and Outreach Coordinator may elect to be paid for 10 months, at $3000 each, or choose to spread the income over twelve months, at $2500 per month.

Holidays include those listed on the University of Washington academic calendar, unless Wesley Club has a scheduled special event, and up to 10 days medical leave allowed annually, as necessary.  Ten days of vacation provided, to be taken during the break between the fall and winter quarter.  Benefits negotiable.
