Good Friday, with its graphic images of death and despair, is endurable every year because we already know that Easter is coming, soon. But what if we didn’t know that? What if we didn’t have a script for Holy Week, what if everything were happening in real time for the first time? Sort of like life, in other words. Of all the scriptural players in the drama of the first Passion, it was Mary Magdalene who kept showing up, with love and trust, though she could not possibly have known how it would all play out. It’s still true that showing up, with love and trust, is a good strategy when facing the unknown.
