So many metaphors for describing the experience that there is more to us than just our bodies and our minds… Here is American writer George Saunders’ take:
That luminous part of you that exists beyond personality, your soul, if you will, is as bright and shining as any that has ever been, bright as Shakespeare’s, bright as Gandhi’s, and bright as Mother Teresa’s. Clear away everything that keeps you separate from this secret luminous place. Believe it exists, come to know it better, nurture it, share its fruits tirelessly.
One breath; one breath at time.
A breath-on-breath is all we get,
and you cannot take it with you
Spirit within us, Spirit we call Holy,
With us, not of us, God’s own self with ours.
Presence of power, Spirit to spirit given,
This be our prayer now:
Through us your will be done.
There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening
That is translated through you into action,
And because there is only one of you in all time,
This expression is unique.
