Is love a grand illusion
That comes and goes at will,
A heart that’s always longing,
A heart that’s never still?
Is love about the princes
And Snow-Whites of the mind
Or can love give the sharing
That humans long to find?
Our love has many faces
Which range from fierce to mild.
It comes as sister, brother,
As parent or as child.
It comes as friend and lover
To set the world alight.
It comes as prophets bravely
Uphold the cause of right.
True marriage is a bonding
Of spirit and of flesh,
A love not based on merit,
A cosmic blessedness.
But bonding turns to bondage
Unless two trees can breathe;
The cells should grow together
But not the stems or leaves.
God’s love is not possessive,
God’s love is always kind,
God’s love believes in freedom
For every heart and mind.
True love is interaction,
A bridge between two spheres,
A way without absorption,
A path beyond our fears.
O Spirit help this couple
To nurture their romance,
Avoiding all that’s dreary
Or set in solemn stance.
May each new day bring wonder,
That comes from sharing praise,
Till thankfulness spills over
Delighting all their ways.
NOTE: For other than a wedding, change “this couple” to “each couple.” For weddings verse 2 may be omitted.
