A Clay-Revealed Divinity

A pale lump of moistened clay was sitting on the ground
Amid the vastness of nature, God’s creation all around

Its undefined shape and chemical substance just laid there
No special object of beauty or reverence at which to stare

Would the lump dissolve back into the ground below?
Or find some purpose or use that humans could bestow?

Perhaps to make a brick to be used for some dwelling
Or some other shaped form — there’s actually no telling

Perhaps shaped into a deity figure in a “likeness” of God
As the ancients did, some current folks would still nod

Sculpted into a human or animal or some other creature
Do iconic figures bring us closer to God without teacher?

The divine-filled rabbi/teacher seen as Jesus, the Nazarene
So profoundly learned was he like no one else yet seen

God seen more like the constituents, not so much the form
Like clay chemicals supporting the shape being the norm

God as the ground of all being, pervasive, encompassing
To conceptualize the divine need not be form-confining

God’s unifying Spirit touches all that is, was, or will ever be
Wonder and awe pulling us closer to the Ultimate Mystery
