I Wonder as I Wander (Appalachia)

Words and Music collected by John Jacob Niles Revised words by Tina Datsko de Sanchez

1. I wonder as I wander out under the sky,

How Jesus our Rabbi did teach that we try

To love one another, no you and no I…

I wonder as I wander out under the sky.

2. When Mary birthed Jesus there in a cow’s stall,

With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.

Did high from God’s heaven a star’s light then fall?

And the promise of ages did it then recall?

3. Would Jesus our teacher need any grand thing,

A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing,

Or all of God’s angels in heaven to sing,

Three wise men on camels, or to be called King?
