While there are many factors that lead up to tragedy like the mass murders in mosques in New Zealand, one factor that must not be ignored is religious sectarianism. Mass murders have taken place in churches, synagogues, and mosques, as well as in gay nightclubs, elementary schools, high schools, and colleges. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam must engage in an honest analysis of how each have perpetuated and taught prejudices and sectarian hatred. The progressive movement must spark a reformation in all three of these religious traditions so that we all encourage critical thinking and evidence-based faith rather than indoctrinating our own to repeat creedal traditions and reality denying beliefs.
