During the early 1980’s, when AIDS was first discovered, the Regan administration not only did virtually nothing in response, but when asked about it in press briefings, the response was laughter and gay bashing jokes. More than 600,000 Americans have died from AIDS and related illness. How many of those deaths could have been prevented by an administration that was able to see gay citizens as being fully human? These insensitivities continue to echo through the decades in American policy, calling for a prophetic church to stand up and speak truth to power whenever minorities are abused, whenever illegal and unjust wars are proposed, and whenever the resources of a nation are withheld from those in need.
