It has stories and affirmations written to help children clarify their own personal beliefs while staying open to the wisdom of other traditions.

Most young children are born with a sense of wonder and anticipate discovery around every corner. A shiny penny or a snowflake holds a world of delight. But perhaps because our culture tends to overstimulate and excite our children, boredom begins to seep in as children get older. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints of, “I’ve seen that” or “I know that already” from children who are already closing the doors to their sense of discovery.

The best way to enjoy the planet is to get out and do something — not sit and talk about it.

This lesson offers an encouraging reminder for an attitude of enjoyment and appreciation when we experience the natural world in all its forms. To enjoy means to have an inner experience of joy — to be “in joy” as our bodies and minds are engaged in activity.

Progressive Christians believe that resisting oppression or cruelty in society has always been both an obligation and an opportunity for those who follow Jesus. It is an obligation because it is a way to test our commitment to the path. It is an opportunity because putting oneself at risk on behalf of another, as a result of one’s compassion, can be one of the most direct paths to an experience of the realm of God or that absolute sense of connectedness.

This point, recognizing that we open ourselves to a constant flow of grace as we search for understanding, is inextricably linked to the eighth point in Progressive Christian beliefs: that we are committed to a lifelong path of learning. For as soon as we think we have arrived at the end point of understanding, we close ourselves to that flow of grace. Wisdom teachers of all paths describe gradual awakening or a progressive realization of understanding, marked by moments of clear inner revelation; but if we keep searching, there are ever-new octaves of clarity.

The Jesus of the scriptures was a man of action. He was someone who healed, demonstrated compassion, took a stand against injustices, loved unconditionally, and told his disciples to go and do likewise. As followers of Jesus, Progressive Christians are dedicated to treating
their fellow human beings with kindness, caring, and compassion.

No matter what our family looks like outwardly, or whether our family is one of blood or one of choice, family is where we have some of the deepest connections of our hearts. Family is our first and lifelong teacher.

This group of lessons introduces children to the beliefs and rituals of five major world religions.

The core value of this curriculum is that children have experiences that open their hearts and give them moments of joy and feelings of unity with nature and with others. These moments can occur through the arts and through the physical body. Therefore, most of the activities involve one or both. The intellect analyzes and distinguishes differences—valuable skills for scientific research and progress. The heart receives and feels unity. One of the goals of these lessons is that children understand that people of different religions have much in common.

One of the major challenges for Progressive Christians in the years to come is paying more attention to “equipping the saints.” The dictionary meaning for “equipping” is “to supply with intellectual, emotional, or spiritual essentials.” It is derived from an old French term which means “to put to sea, to embark.” The Center for Progressive Christianity has picked up this challenge and provided congregations and parents with two years of relevant and imaginative curriculums for the 21st century. They have taken the lead in reframing Sunday school teachings and made them into invaluable resources for “equipping the saints” as they head out on the sea of our culture. Whether you are a parent, a Sunday School teacher, a preacher, a spiritual seeker, or just someone who likes to look at ideas from a child’s point of view, this one’s for you.

<p>In <strong>A Joyful Path, Year 2,</strong> we plan to focus on some of the main tenets of Progressive Christianity and Spirituality, giving our children the foundation they need to understand the basics of this path, to clarify their own personal beliefs and be able to discuss those with others, while at the same time showing what it means to walk the path of Jesus in today's world.</p>
<p>Year Two will be similar to Year One, in that it will have 38 unique lessons, full color original artwork, a contemplative and introductory section for the teacher in each lesson, 38 original short stories, incredible heart warming, feeling based activities, and tips to bring music and nature into each lesson.</p>
<p>Year Two will have be slightly different from Year One, in that we are going to focus on 9-10 main topics that will be broken down into sections.&nbsp; The topics we are currently considering (these may change) are: &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Wisdom Traditions from around the world, Inclusion, History of the Bible, Seasons, Our Stuff, Energy and the Universe, Heroes and Villains, and Nature. &nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>We will keep you posted on all developments and changes for this project. We currently have our writers, artist, and creative team ready to begin!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though we won't have Year Two completed and ready for use until 2013, keep in mind that this does not mean that you are without resources for this next year.&nbsp; Children love repetition — think about their tireless requests to hear the same book read over and over and over again!&nbsp; So, even if you have walked completely through Year One, we feel you can reuse this curriculum again with your class with confidence.&nbsp; These stories are so engaging, the activities so memorable, and the prayers, meditations and affirmations are so relevant to their lives that children will love to revisit each lesson.&nbsp; You might find your class even more excited this second time around because there will be a comfortable familiarity with the structure of the class time, as well as the content — a happy space in which children thrive and their creativity soars.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>Also, you may have children that are new to the age group while others have moved onto an older class.&nbsp; Plus, each lesson is so rich with material that it is very likely you may not have gotten to use every part of each lesson.&nbsp; Consider re-visiting A Joyful Path with your class–we know it will be another meaningful experience for you and the children. <p>We have felt for a long time that this Children's curriculum is a central piece of what we are about – our Magnum Opus, if you will.&nbsp; For if we cannot express our values as progressive Christians for the next generation in a way that makes sense in their 21st century experience, then all we have done 'till now is for nothing.</p>

We have begun our Year Two Project! With over 300 groups using A Joyful Path, Year One, with only positive results, we’ve had a lot of inquiries lately as to when the second year of A Joyful Path, is coming out. We are pleased to announce that, thanks to a recent, generous donation, we are now ready to begin A Joyful Path, Year Two! We are committed to continuing the high level of scholarship, creativity, and quality found in A Joyful Path, Year One, so we are not expecting to have Year Two ready until Spring of 2013.
