Reading the lectionary with Scientific Equivalents

Most churches follow the common lectonary. Here’s an idea for your writers to pursue.

Match every lectionary reading with an equivalent reading from scientific literature.

For example:

1. Creation Narrative – Selections from Stephen Hawking regarding the Big Bang, and Darwin’s origin of the Species

2. Flood Narrative – History of ancient floods, and modern flood control techniques

3. The Sun stood still – Calculations of the angular momentum required to make ithe earth’s rotation stop, and restart.

4. The axe-head that floated, Jesus walked on the water – Selections from Archimedes explaining his principle

5. Multiplication of Food and Water – Selections from chemical accounts of the way molecules and atoms interact without ever being multiplied or destroyed.

6. Jesus’ Ascencsion – Explanation of the escape velocity required to be free from gravity’s effect

The possibilities are endless. Your writers should be able to find appropriate scientific literature to match every single lectionary reading, and use them to give a “fair and balanced” reading from the scriptures.

You will find some of these ways of coping with the anti-scientific ideas of the bible in my recent book “When Science is Right and the Bible is Wrong.”
