The cold wind blows on starless night,
And wends its chill through crevices tight.
It wills no ill on those who seek
A warm hearth and haven in which to sneak.
It holds no malice towards the rich or the wise,
Nor does it berate those poor or despised.
It offers no grievance toward the powerful and strong,
And offers no comfort to the weak and the wronged.
It goes to and fro wherever it can,
And has no regard for who owns the land.
For deserts and mountains, it has no regard;
No ocean or canyon its breath will retard.
Amoral its mission, it whispers in ears;
And yet by its actions, it conjures our fears.
“I’m impartial to all, as you plainly can see!
What harm can I do by just being me?”
“My motto has been, ‘Live and let be!’
Who can blame me for just being free?”
And so it reasons, as though virtuous in trait;
Denying its influence on other ones’ fate.
It sees not the hardships its gusts do cause;
Nor would regret damages done, if only it paused.
Pernicious its will to do as it please;
Devoid of a conscience, it has no dis-ease.
Untied to any others, no burden it bears;
Self-serving it roams with nary a care.
No pains and no worries, it wafts gaily about;
But hardly enlightened, with spiritual drought.
Apathetic and elusive, it’s confused by its goal;
Nirvana it sought, and thought it had stole.
Proud of its vigor, it boasts of its feats;
By getting its way, it denied its defeat.
Can salvation be found by those who don’t care;
Who self-interest do seek, but compassion not dare?
Happiness smiles on the generous of soul;
On those who are grateful for being part of the whole.
Risking the pain of loving all others
Means wherever you go, you’ll at least be a brother.
Let not my spirit ever be a cold wind;
For whatever my power, your love I’ll not win.
I renounce here my freedom to do as I wish;
In hopes I’ll find friendship, or share a warm dish.
Let me not breeze through life as unrestricted,
But with kindness for others be always convicted.
