An hourglass stands firmly on the mantle of a fireplace
“Sands of time” are resting quietly at the glass bottom
The passage of time has long ago trickled downward
Life events drifted behind us, not again to be repeated
The past is over, the sand lies still — but could old times return again?
A hand grabs the glass, the time machine turned upside down
Grains drop gently again — but toward a future that’s unknown
New events will usher in new memories during this clock-like fall
We learn that it’s memories that lie in the wake of time gone by
Our yesterdays not to re-occur in quite the same way ever again
Nature’s time lesson is taught often starkly and so soberly
We are to “savor life’s moments as if snowflakes soon to melt”
Time marches quickly forward, it seems, much to our chagrin
Intangible and inescapable — a realm into which all are woven
But if our memories persist, they may sustain us until tomorrow
We hope most are cherished recollections of love-lived lives, lived well
And when it comes time to surrender our mortal beings to the Creator
May our hourglass selves join the divine in the “Dimension Eternal”
