When we feel all weighed down with guilt *
And find forgiveness out of reach
We take your hand, O tender Christ,
And walk with you along life’s beach.
There we can hear the pounding surf,
The rhythmic throb of love and life
And in that pulse relive our birth
From water’s womb to dazzling light.
There seems no end to sea and sky,
The picture signs forgiving grace:
Within that love we take our rest
And find ourselves in Christ’s embrace.
His outstretched arms dissolve our guilt,
Through love’s transforming sacrifice,
Enabling all to share with grace
The sea of prayerful paradise.
*Alternative wording “shame” instead of “guilt”.
Note: If a four verse hymn is required the tune MELCOMBE can be used.
