“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”
That was Calvin Coolidge, U.S. President through the 1920’s. His world must have seemed tumultuous to him, even as ours does to us. But every year we get the same reminder: that the real spirit of Christmas persists, in spite of what the nightly news tells us. Do your best to hold onto it.
Searching for the Christmas spirit –
Is it heard when angels sing?
Is it found in deeds of merit?
Is it heard when church bells ring?
Come and treasure Jesus’ memory;
All the beauty it can bring.
Sometimes the footfall seems incessant,
a challenge to our selfish greed,
how can we clothe and house such numbers,
our fears well up and veils their need.
We believe in an Ultimate Reality,
a reality beyond our words
