The inspirational power of a good idea is constantly amazing. Consider the case of California organic farmer Michael O’Gorman, who put together two seemly-unrelated trends: the aging of American farmers and the high unemployment among returning military veterans.
What if the vets – often from rural communities themselves – could be mentored by older farmers for a peacetime career in agriculture? From that idea came the Farmer Veteran Coalition (farmvetco.org). Everybody wins. (Thanks to Joan Bien of AARP Magazine for bringing this to light!)
Take and eat: take and meet
This is my body: I am the bread
The bread of life, the bread of lives
We eat with our friends, enjoying a meal
In fellowship sweet; it has great appeal;
The same was for Jesus; it was a strong sign
To demonstrate friendship — in bread and in wine.
Show me the suffering of the most miserable;
So I will know my people’s plight.
Free me to pray for others;
For you are present in every person.
