When we read words written by others, we often don’t know the context in which the words were written. Sometimes the story behind the words is the best part.
That’s certainly true when you’re reading sacred scripture like the Bible, and it’s why modern Bible scholarship is so important to progressive Christianity. It’s also true of the liturgies that we publish. Look for the story behind the words.
Beatitude Five: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” Jesus was merciful, but didn’t receive mercy.
