The Posadas Song

(English)

1

Outside

In the name of heaven,
I ask you for shelter
because my beloved wife
can continue no longer.

Inside

This is no inn,
continue on your way.
I am not about to open.
You may be a scoundrel.

Outside

Don’t be inhuman.
Have charity.
For the God of the heavens
will reward you.

Inside

Now you can go
and don’t bother us
because if I get angry
I will hit you.

Outside

We come exhausted
all the way from Nazareth;
I am a carpenter
by the name of Joseph.

Inside

I don’t care what your name is.
Let me go back to sleep,
I am telling you
I am not about to open.

Outside

The queen of heaven
is asking for shelter,
dear landlord,
just for one night.

Inside

Well, if it is a queen
who is asking,
how is it that at night
she travels so alone?

3

Outside

My wife is Mary,
she is queen of Heaven,
and she will be mother
of the Divine Word.

Inside

Are you Joseph,
your wife is Mary?
Come in, pilgrims,
I did not recognize you.

Outside

May God reward
your great charity, good people,
and fill the heavens
with happiness.

Inside

Blessed the house
that shelters this day
the pure Virgin,
the beautiful Mary!

Final verse upon entering.

Enter holy pilgrims, pilgrims;
Accept this corner.
Although the dwelling is poor,
I give it to you with all my heart.
Let us sing with joy, joy.
Let us reflect together, that Jesus, Joseph and Mary,
have come today to honor us. (Repeat)

La Canción de Las Posadas

1

Fuera

En el nombre del cielo,
les pido posada
pues no puede andar
mi esposa amada.

Dentro

Aquí no es meson
sigan adelante
yo no he de abrir
no sea algún tunante.

Fuera

No sean inhumanos
tengan caridad
que el Dios de los cielos
se lo premiará.

Dentro

Ya se pueden ir
y no molestar
porque si me enfado
los voy a apalear.

2

Fuera

Venimos rendidos
desde Nazaret;
yo soy carpintero
de nombre José.

Dentro

No me importa el nombre;
déjenme dormir,
pues ya les digo
que no he de abrir.

Fuera

Posada te pide
amado casero,
por sólo un a noche
la Reina del Cielo.

Dentro

Pues si es una reina
quien lo solicita
¿cómo es que de noche
anda tan solita?

3

Fuera

Mi esposa es María;
es reina del cielo
y madre va a ser
del Divino Verbo.

Dentro

¿Eres tú José,
tu esposa es María?
Entren peregrinos,
no los conocía.

Fuera

Dios pague, señores,
su gran caridad,
y les colme el cielo
de felicidad.

Dentro

Dichosa la casa
que alberga este día
a la Virgen pura,
la hermosa María.

Canto de conclusión al entrar en la casa.

Todos adentro

Entren santos peregrinos, peregrinos,
reciban este rincón.
Que aunque es pobre la morada,
la morada,
se la doy de corazón.
Cantemos con alegría, alegría,
todos al considerar. Que Jesús, José y María, y María,
nos vinieron hoy a honrar. (Repite)
